Defense guide: Suji

(This is secon part of UmaiKeiki’s defense guide — Betaori and Suji posted in Osamuko’s Mahjong Blog)

Suji is one of the more complex theories in Mahjong. There are many variations and types of Suji, but it all boils down to one basic goal: to identify which Ryanmen waits are safe and which are dangerous.

Ordinary Suji are the tiles that complete Ryanmen waits.

Defense guide: Betaori

This is a part of   “UmaiKeiki’s defense guide — Betaori and Suji” posted in Osamuko’s Mahjong Blog

All thanks to UmaiKeiki =)

Introduction to defense

Defense in Mahjong is focused primarily on how to avoid dealing into opponents’ hands. In other words, playing defensively means making fewer payments. You know that saying “a penny saved is a penny earned”? This is VERY true in Japanese Mahjong! Your points are valuable; don’t let someone take them without a fight!

Introducing Puyo!

(Original of this post you can find at – Reachmahjong.com)

For the last year I have had the privilege of writing a regular column with Kelvin “Puyo” Ng, from Hong Kong, about mahjong in a Macau-based magazine called World Gaming Magazine. Puyo and I are both Reach-based mahjong players, but we’ve collaborated to broaden our coverage, emphasizing on Chinese-based rules as well. Puyo is a regular Mahjong Fight Club player and keeps a blog in Chinese about Japanese mahjong. Puyo has worked as a senior official at the World Series of Mahjong and was a member of the RM.com/WGM team at the 2010 event.

One of our avid readers, xKime, has volunteered to translate Puyo’s blog so that our English audience can enjoy this expert’s insight. Twice a month we will introduce one of Puyo’s blogs. This first one is an introduction in tile efficiency. So enjoy and if there’s a subject you’d like more info on e-mail us and maybe Puyo will oblige!

World Riichi Mahjong Championship: Paris, 2014

party-jpml

TOKYO/PARIS – It were two historic meetings, last week in the Japanese capital of Tokyo. Gemma Collinge of Reachmahjong.com and Martin Rep of MahjongNews.Com, shook hands with Mr. Shigekazu Moriyama, CEO of the Japanese Pro Mahjong League. They had just finished talks about the first ever World Championship Riichi Mahjong.

“Mission completed”, smiled Martin Rep and Gemma Collinge after the last meeting, which they concluded with a ‘high five’. Immediately after that, they started writing their report for the European Mahjong Association (EMA) and the Paris riichi mahjong club TNT (Tri Nitro Tiles).

Riichi rules

Riichi (modern Japanese mahjong) was introduced independently in several European countries, and consequently slight differences in the rules existed across the continent.

With the scheduling of the first European Riichi Championship in 2008, the need arose to standardize the riichi rules in the context of the European Mahjong Association. This resulted in the EMA Riichi Competition Rules as standard for Riichi tournaments.

The rules were revised in 2012.
